No crew, no data
Every fleet-level safety metric ultimately rests on something a person at sea chose to write down. If reporting a near miss takes twenty minutes, requires a shore-side login, and has historically led to someone being blamed, it will not be reported. Your incident numbers will look excellent, and they will be meaningless.
A reporting rate that goes up after a new system is deployed is usually good news. It means people have started telling you things.
Designing for the person on watch
People-first technology at sea has a specific meaning, and it is not a friendly colour palette. It means the software assumes bandwidth is scarce, the device is being used with gloves on, the user is tired, and the form is being filled in at 03:00 after something went wrong.

- Photo and voice input, because typing a paragraph on a rolling deck is not realistic
- Classification done by the system, not by the reporter — nobody at sea should need to know your taxonomy
- Visible closure, so the crew sees that what they reported actually led to something
Wellbeing is an operational metric
Fatigue, isolation and low morale are not soft concerns; they are leading indicators of the incidents you are trying to prevent. Anonymous wellbeing pulse checks give you a signal weeks before it shows up as a near miss, and months before it shows up as a resignation.
Treat the crew as the primary user rather than the data source, and the rest of your ESG programme starts standing on something solid.
